# Workshop choices — useful scale and connected progression ## C07-WORK-01 — The workshop is a place with a purpose A workshop becomes memorable when the player knows what each part contributes. An unfinished load sits beside a bench, the next operation occupies a visible machine, a completed component waits in the right place, and the resulting improvement can be found in the world. The player should be able to explain why the workshop grew. A charging rack exists because equipment now leaves for longer trips; a controlled production line exists because a recurring order became worth organizing; a protected sample bench exists because the last expedition brought home something that needs careful handling. The industrial ambition remains broad: mechanical work, power, material preparation, chemistry, environmental services, storage, freight and advanced specializations. Breadth is expressed through different useful capabilities. It is not expressed by making every ordinary object pass through the entire catalogue. The industrial bands remain overlapping capability descriptions. IP04 regional production may improve the cost of a repeated order while a compact IP03 flight workshop is already preparing its first mission. A player can develop deeper Earth industry before another journey or return from the Moon with a reason to improve a small existing room. This refinement uses three installation configurations as review tools. They are layouts and work patterns, not three new controller blocks, settlements or technology tiers. Their functions retain the existing IND identities. A free-built workshop can satisfy the same functional relationships as a room in Old Valley. The settlement story gives those improvements a setting; it does not become an invisible permit to operate an otherwise complete machine. Source basis: C06-P06-01–05; IP00–IP09; WP05-PLAN-01–04; C06-P02-03–05. ## C07-WORK-02 — Three configurations, three reasons to build | Configuration | First meaningful job | Essential organization | What expansion earns | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Compact workshop | Repair equipment, charge a field cell, fabricate a bounded part order, prepare a supported journey | Reachable ordinary inputs, deliberate hand work, compatible typed services and a place for finished goods | The player can do a complete useful job without committing to regional throughput. | | Regional workshop | Repeat a known order for several projects or a regular expedition programme | Material-specific preparation, sufficient actual power, local handling, separate residues and reserved stock | Fewer repeated actions, more convenient batches, better recovery or useful material properties. | | Frontier workshop | Survey, service the rover and process selected samples close to a Mars route | Imported starter equipment, commissioned refuge, protected working surfaces and actual local supplies | Faster interpretation, shorter repair journeys and selective reduction in imported service burden. | A compact workshop should look complete when it performs its chosen job. It may have a few benches against a wall, a modest source, labeled shelves and a short loading path. Empty future machinery footprints do not need to dominate it. A regional installation can expose larger material and cargo movement, but its dry pedestrian route should remain understandable. The frontier workshop can share a shelter-adjacent service court with the rover and a contained workroom for samples. The surrounding terrain still matters: the yard earns its site by serving a real route. The configuration comparison fixes responsibilities, not floor dimensions. Working surfaces, player approach, motion, tanks, cargo and service faces all need space. A later model fit study must test those spaces together. A diagram can identify an access strip without claiming a particular number of blocks is already sufficient. Reusing a footprint label from concept art does not verify a replacement machine fits that footprint. ## C07-WORK-03 — Required capability, optional scale A capability is required when the chosen job cannot be honestly performed without it. A supported propellant preparation method is required for an expedition that consumes that propellant. A large chemical train is not automatically required when the compact Fuel Refinery already has an earlier accepted process. The final recipe still needs selection, but the documentation must not contradict its early-access obligation. Similarly, field equipment needs actual charge, while a large stationary bank is only necessary when its storage or delivery role solves the selected installation's demand. Use four explicit relationship labels in the machine review matrix: core function for a selected job; conditional function for a selected process; capacity/convenience option; later specialist branch. These labels apply to use cases, not permanent prestige rankings. IND-M09 is central to a ceramic order and irrelevant to a simple metal fitting repair. IND-M24 can make sense for a regional crystallization process without becoming compulsory for the first contained Brine Catalyst sample route. A large installation is not exempt from explaining its prerequisite simply because it looks advanced. An installation can combine compatible responsibilities where the player can still identify the work and its costs. Textile preparation, panel assembly and seal fitting can share a serviced room and some storage. Their operations and recipes remain distinct. Service inspections can share the appropriate equipped surface. Full-vehicle assembly remains the dedicated REF09 identity and its linked berth; the smaller REF10 fabrication table remains separately recognizable. Sharing a host is not permission to turn either into a universal machine. The first safe route takes precedence when a proposed recipe conflicts with its own bootstrap requirement. Identify the conflicting input, retain it as an unresolved proposal, and use an explicitly earlier alternative in the worked design. Do not silently rename bauxite into alumina clay or treat Heartglass as draconium. The current chart relationship and creative material role remain separate until a supported equivalence is chosen. ## C07-WORK-04 — The compact installation in use The compact configuration begins with already useful hand and mechanical work. A player brings ordinary prepared stock, places a known repair order, and keeps the repaired tool's identity. Common smelting and shaping remain practical for small amounts. Reusable patterns describe a familiar component family; individual decorative screws and rivets do not become an expanding inventory puzzle. The first electrical job is preparation of an existing field cell for a lamp or survey instrument. The source, delivery path, compatible receiver and charge state are visible. A modest bank can separate the time the source runs from the time equipment is prepared, but it does not amplify the supplied energy. A missing source is different from an incompatible cell, and a full receiver is different from a broken charger. Those distinctions should be inspectable before the player places another machine. When the player chooses flight, the existing WP05 worked progression applies. Ordinary stock and earlier processes support fabrication, assembly and typed launch services. Fuel, breathing supply and electricity remain different quantities. The workshop's basic usefulness is already established before the complete rocket order begins. After the first return, the same benches repair equipment and help make a lunar-derived light guide or ceramic application. This edition credits that complete loop rather than charging its starting workshop costs a second time. The compact layout leaves one useful finished-goods position and a declared place for reusable containers. A sample offered for study is distinguishable from a unit committed to production. A bound equipment order identifies the selected object, the required replacement, the available input and the requested outcome. If the player cancels before work begins, the object and unconsumed stock remain accessible. A completed repair does not create a second copy of the tool. ## C07-WORK-05 — When regional scale becomes worthwhile Consider a player making the same frame and enclosure stock for several projects. The compact route works but requires repeated preparation, manual movement and attention at each batch. The regional option responds to those costs through explicit working positions, a selected material-preparation route, better buffers and local transport. It does not grant an unexplained universal output multiplier. The wet-processing board C06-A01 remains the representative layout for material-specific crushing, washing, water handling and residue recovery. Use it where the chosen feedstock and recipe justify those functions. A clean already-prepared stock may not need that entire route. The comparison table should state which incoming form is accepted by each method, whether it changes usable output or handling, what extra water or service it needs, and what happens to the residues. Higher throughput cannot be credited without accounting for its additional supply and parallel working positions. The regional stockroom reserves goods for an actual order without making a second physical inventory. A completed batch enters a real receiver; a full receiver stops the affected line before valuable stock is discarded. Belts and chutes explain local transfer. A freight record reserves already-produced goods and follows the existing receiving-region rule. It never keeps an absent factory secretly producing, and it does not require simultaneous attendance at both endpoints. Regional growth preserves a useful compact route. The player may still hand-make a replacement part while the bulk line is waiting for a missing feedstock. A damaged high-throughput service should not strand every ordinary repair behind itself. The comparison therefore records a fallback for routine work and a distinct process requirement for specialized products. A hand bench can shape a simple fitting; it cannot invent the unique chemical result of an unavailable processor. ## C07-WORK-06 — The frontier installation as a bridge to Mars The first Mars capability is carried in. The first rover frame, protection, sampling equipment, refuge and return supplies use earlier reachable Earth/Moon resources. The field workshop makes the initial plan more convenient; it cannot be the only means to survive long enough to commission itself. A compact sample operation can return a protected specimen to the established home workshop before a local production line exists. The recommended first frontier arrangement has a dry personal/service area, a clear rover stopping and turning area, and a contained sample working position associated with the actual suitable enclosure or equipment. Cleaning an external fitting is different from refilling breathing stock. A dust-protected table in a cave is different from a commissioned breathable room. Each service states whether it can be performed outside in protected equipment or needs an enclosed working environment. Mars adds two particularly useful reasons to revisit this installation. PM03 Ferric Lattice supports a replaceable external rack member or repairable support. PM04 Brine Catalyst supplies a finite active cartridge for a selected process or habitat-service improvement. Both are upgrades after earlier capability. The rover remains operable with its earlier frame, and ordinary imported habitat supplies remain valid. The player chooses local processing when its result or reduced carrying burden justifies the site. # Workshop families — power, protection and sample work ## C07-MACH-01 — A consistent machine card Each focused family is specified through purpose, player action, visible components, connection types, assembly stages, operating states, service access, interruption/recovery and upgrade value. A card also states its first supported job and what is outside its responsibility. The new cards refine existing functions. They do not replace the original handbook or establish final mesh dimensions, UVs, texture atlases, animation files or runtime implementation. The common state vocabulary remains unassembled, isolated, idle, waiting, ready, running, output held, service required and parked where applicable. Reasons remain attached to states: waiting for a compatible receiver is different from waiting for water. Animation follows the actual operation, not the presence of decorative light. Isolation makes the relevant mechanism stop and the service condition visible; a separate inspection light may remain supplied only if its independence is explicit. An illustrator's orange indicator never proves isolation. ## C07-MACH-02 — A source, a bank, a switchboard and a receiver IND-M32, IND-M37, IND-M38 and IND-M39 form the first focused family. Their visual identities should remain distinct even when the installation is compact. The source shows the input that drives it. The bank shows stored charge. The switchboard shows permitted distribution and the state of branches. The charging rack shows the particular compatible item being prepared. These are four responsibilities rather than four compulsory buildings. | Function | Visible components and connections | Player operation | Boundary | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | IND-M32 source assembly | A supported mechanical drive or declared fuel source, generator housing, reachable isolation and electrical output | Commission the supplied source; choose whether it serves a current load or charges storage | The pictured drive must connect to a real supported source; an idle decorative wheel creates no energy. | | IND-M37 stationary bank | Contained storage modules, compatible input/output, charge indication and access face | Reserve or release a portion of actual charge for a declared purpose | Stored energy, maximum delivery and compatibility remain separate values. | | IND-M38 distribution | Input, distinct essential and workshop branches, readable controls | Inspect demand and assign supported priority | A job cannot silently consume the occupied refuge's protected allocation. | | IND-M39 charging rack | Compatible equipment slot, actual input, occupied/ready indication and removal access | Insert a supported cell, request a target charge and retrieve the same item | Filling a cell does not manufacture another cell or bypass conversion cost. | The proposed assembly sequence is place supported housings, establish the source input, connect the bank/distribution relationship, attach the compatible load, and perform a small commissioning order. A bank is included where its buffering is useful. A direct compatible source-to-load route can remain an earlier option. Neither diagram nor model implies that power can pass through any nearby decorative block. A running drive uses restrained rotation; a charging rack indicates actual transfer; a ready receiver stops its transfer animation. Removing the receiver pauses delivery safely and preserves charge already inside it. Source interruption reduces current supply without erasing stored energy. Dismantling requires actual stored goods and connected services to be accounted for. Expanding storage adds real capacity, while expanding source/delivery adds the corresponding supported capability and costs. Neither upgrades the other automatically. ## C07-MACH-03 — Protection materials as a shared workshop family IND-M10 panel/laminate work, IND-M11 textile work and IND-M12 seal/filter work can occupy a related group of benches. The recommended family uses common frame details, flat working surfaces, visible reusable patterns, short stock racks and distinctly placed finished components. It should look like practical Minecraft equipment with simple cloth sheets, spools and block-scale housings. No microscopic fiber or photographic weave is needed to identify the material. The player selects a known protection or repair job, supplies its supported stock, checks what the pattern will make, and performs a bounded operation. The input can be an ordinary earlier textile or seal option where the chosen route supports it. Later resin, fiber or laminate variants improve specified properties; they do not retroactively make the first suit impossible. A seal is matched to a supported fitting class, and a filter cartridge has a declared active medium and spent state. Decorative colors do not create incompatible hidden subtypes. The panel table exposes the layer arrangement and the actual component receiving it. Textile preparation handles ordinary cloth or a selected usable fiber and returns its supported sheet/spool form. Seal/filter work fits a finite prepared insert into reusable housing. A shared work surface may support these operations through distinct tools and explicit recipes. It cannot perform every operation simultaneously using one occupied slot, and changing a tool does not duplicate work held in progress. The assembly preview distinguishes the bench, any motion envelope, storage and a free approach. A cutting or pressing motion stops before service begins. A blocked completed-item position holds the finished part. A damaged input is inspected before a consumptive action where that fault matters. Interrupted coating or curing returns the stated intermediate or continues from its saved process stage; it does not become a fresh raw sheet plus a finished panel. Cancellation semantics must be written for any irreversible stage before that recipe is accepted. The first useful result may be a repairable enclosure seal, an appropriate filter insert or a simple protective panel. The later benefit may be easier cartridge replacement, reuse of housing, a more convenient batch or a specific supported environmental property. A single universal textile should not erase every destination's preparation. Higher-grade protection should also not force the player to discard every previous bench and spare fitting. ## C07-MACH-04 — Samples and compact processing IND-M51 sample laboratory and IND-M23 reaction-vessel preparation provide the proposed first PM04 route. IND-M16 water treatment, IND-M24 evaporation/crystallization and IND-M58 vehicle service are neighboring responsibilities when a particular process requires them. They are not all automatic prerequisites for an initial sample. The documentation records which host performs each operation and leaves unsupported numerical recipes unresolved. The sample position includes a supported closed incoming container, an inspectable work surface, a suitable process chamber where needed, a labeled receiver and a place for reusable or spent components. Clear tubing in concept art represents a typed connection, not permission to merge breathing supply with process fluid. A field lab needs the actual power, containment, environmental support and carrier stock named by its selected method. The first sample can be shipped to an already equipped workshop if those requirements are not locally met. The player registers a sample's provenance without consuming a second imaginary copy, selects study or processing, and commits only the units required by that action. Knowledge can remain after material is consumed, but a display specimen, a processing input and an unprocessed reserve must occupy their actual separate quantities. A closed container retains ownership and condition through transport. If a receiver is incompatible, the process waits before attempting a transfer. For the compact catalyst example, the active material is a finite prepared charge inside a reusable cartridge housing. Input preparation produces a named active batch, a declared residue if any, and recovered containers. The cartridge supplies a particular supported duty and later enters an exhausted state. Replacing its active charge consumes new accepted material. Cleaning the housing does not reactivate spent contents. An unexplained perpetual catalyst would contradict the selected finite-service design and is excluded from this worked recommendation. The regional alternative may add a larger source batch, preparation stages, recovery and more convenient distribution. It must pay for those stages through actual input, energy, service stock and equipment. Its advantage is declared before commissioning: less repetitive sample handling, improved recovery for that feedstock, a compact supported duty or a specified material property. The model cannot claim all those advantages merely by being taller. ## C07-MACH-05 — Field repairs and the vehicle-service relationship IND-M58 adapts the shared workshop language to the supported vehicle. The Survey Rover has an accessible service side, a rear modular rack, a stowed instrument mast and declared supply compartments. A service bay provides a stopping position, isolation, the selected repair tools, actual compatible stock and clearance for boarding and emergency access. It does not repair every possible chassis at once or confer a pressure seal on an open cargo deck. The first repaired external rack corner is a useful modest example. The player parks, secures the load elsewhere if it blocks access, selects the damaged member, isolates relevant motion, consumes the declared replacement stock and returns the vehicle to a known ready condition. If a PM03 member is available, it may support a defined modular-repair advantage. If it is not, a supported earlier member remains valid. Neither choice increases verified cargo capacity unless a later configuration study explicitly establishes it. More demanding service can require a gantry or a larger bay, but routine field repair keeps a supported carried alternative. A disabled rover preserves its recorded position, cargo and mission association. Player recovery and later cargo salvage are different outcomes. A repair operation cannot clear a mission's protected supply reservation merely to obtain the last compatible cell. ## C07-MACH-06 — Diagrams, model proposals and later evidence The boards supply the family language and work context. The exact diagrams supply connections and state relationships. Final production sheets must later address measured exterior and occupied bounds, port coordinates, moving parts, access strips, animation clips, texture conventions and exports. This edition does not pretend that a multi-view board answers every production question. When a future artist develops the machines, begin with the supported operation and its component boundary. Preserve the chosen silhouettes and the existing confirmed Tier 1 references. Use repeatable material conventions so a cable port, a process connection, a structural attachment and a control face remain distinguishable without relying solely on color. Do not add realistic rivet fields, tiny exposed wires or ornate machine interiors to imply sophistication. Complexity should come from a meaningful arrangement of legible parts. # Worked orders — complete costs and worthwhile improvements ## C07-ORDER-01 — A field charge that changes the next outing The player owns a supported lamp or survey instrument and a compatible partially charged cell. The immediate objective is one prepared outing, not a bank filled to an arbitrary maximum. They inspect the remaining charge, choose the known target, and connect the cell to IND-M39. IND-M38 exposes whether the workshop branch can meet the charging input while preserving an essential service. IND-M32 provides actual supply; IND-M37 contributes only what is present and permitted. Let the requested delivered charge be Q and the supported charging efficiency be eta, where 0 < eta <= 1. Input is at least Q / eta plus any separately declared process duty. The difference is charged to a stated loss or process cost. These symbols are accounting relationships, not finalized unit values. The cell cannot accept more than its supported remaining capacity, and neither the board's two pictured cartridges nor the cabinet size establishes that capacity. A source interruption pauses the order with its delivered amount retained. Retrieving the cell returns the same object with that real amount. A full destination ends the transfer. A repeat order can remember the desired target but cannot reserve nonexistent charge. The resulting lamp makes a familiar work or survey task more convenient. That change is enough to justify the first electrical capability even if the space programme is postponed. ## C07-ORDER-02 — A repeat construction order at regional scale The player has several known projects needing the same accepted fitting and panel family. The compact route has already demonstrated the products. Before expanding, the order desk identifies the total requirement, actual unreserved stock, reusable tooling, and the portions committed to other projects. Existing workshop construction is a sunk installation cost; it is not counted again as a consumable for every batch. For each candidate route, record accepted input form, preparation, transformation, outputs, mandatory byproducts, service inputs and receiving capacity. A raw feedstock may justify preparation that a clean stock skips. The regional comparison includes actual additional working positions, power and water requirements, occupied area and manual handling. The result can favor compact production for a few pieces and regional production for repeated orders without declaring either universally superior. | Question | Compact method | Regional method | | --- | --- | --- | | What must be installed? | Existing suitable benches and the selected actual process | Additional preparation or parallel work only where justified by the chosen feedstock and order | | What work repeats? | More direct loading and small-batch attention | Organized intake and receivers, with actual transfer and service costs | | What changes in output? | The defined recipe result | Only the declared process-specific yield, form or property; no generic multiplier | | What if output is full? | Hold the finished item or wait before starting | Backpressure pauses the affected stage and retains its in-process custody | | What if the site parks? | Retain real stock and progress | Retain the whole composed order state without remote production | The player commissions one small order before reserving the full programme. A readable successful batch becomes the template for repeat work. If a material substitution remains unresolved, the interface and document show that field explicitly; the route is not declared build-ready. A mismatch is a reason to refine the proposed recipe, not to silently substitute a similarly named creative ore. ## C07-ORDER-03 — A Mars discovery improves an existing vehicle After a successful survey, actual accepted source stock supports one selected PM03 repairable member. The study record explains its geological origin; manufacture creates the lattice member through a declared supported forming/composite procedure using ordinary companion inputs. The lattice beam is manufactured geometry. It is not a naturally growing truss harvested intact from a Martian cliff. The proposed application is a replaceable exterior rack corner on SUP01. That component has a visible attachment and a clear service job. Its purpose is convenient modular repair or a defined rugged member property. It does not automatically add cargo slots, make the rover climb cliffs, or improve every statistic. Earlier rack stock remains compatible where the configuration permits it. Choosing not to make the new part does not invalidate the next expedition. The order explicitly separates one preserved specimen, material committed to the component, and remaining reserve. The old member is returned as a stated reusable part, recoverable stock or residue according to the accepted recipe; it cannot simultaneously remain installed. The installed member becomes part of the existing rover's recorded configuration. A second vehicle would require its own actual component. The same pattern applies to PM04. A contained sample becomes a finite active charge, the charge occupies a reusable housing, and the housing is installed in one supported processing or habitat-service duty. The improvement is selected and visible. The procedure must identify what happens when its active stock is exhausted and how a conventional supplied mode remains available. Final savings, capacity and consumption rates remain tuning fields rather than claims made by the diagram. ## C07-ORDER-04 — Progression that preserves earlier places The outcome of each order should have a location in the player's experience. Charged equipment leaves the workshop. A new fitting improves a hoist, crossing or room. A better sample workflow makes an actual expedition easier to prepare. A Mars-derived component changes a recognizable vehicle at the same service bay that handled its original frame. The homecoming is therefore part of progression, not a loading screen between resource deposits. Review each major capability against an earlier alternative and a later reason to retain it. Manual work remains suitable for small repairs. A compact plant remains a practical remote or backup installation. A regional workshop supports repeated construction. A frontier yard makes a particular route more useful. Specialist Earth and outer-world processes can remain ambitious options without becoming invisible requirements for this Mars programme. ## C07-ORDER-05 — Documentation completion and build-readiness limits This slice is complete when the three configurations, reviewed machine relationships, focused families and worked orders are linked to their sources and figures. Each selected order has reachable input categories, a responsible host, a useful result, actual custody and a recovery path. All sixty-six canonical responsibilities retain their names and original roles. The new relationship matrix is a recommendation overlay, not a replacement catalogue or a new implementation schedule. Before a future game slice can claim acceptance, its recipes need exact compatible inputs, quantities, mandatory outputs and byproduct destinations; its power and service values need whole-loop balance; its geometry needs measured player and cargo access; and its interrupted operations need runtime testing. Numerical nulls mean unresolved, never free. The same separation applies to the Mars campaign: a complete written journey is a basis for implementation planning, not evidence that the journey already works in generated terrain.
